Happy Valentines Day!

Hello!

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you found the information on goal setting helpful in my last newsletter.

One in four children have a vision problem that interfers with their ability to learn. At KVDC we want to share information about how binocular vision disorders can affect a person's quality of life. Our mission since opening less than 3 years ago continues to be the same, to educate our community about the difficulties caused by binocular vision problems and to get the word out that there is hope!

Far too often we hear from patients and parents of struggling students, "Why didn't we know about this sooner?" Many of them have been having these problems for years; and are relieved to learn that help is finally possible.

Will you please help spread the word about vision and learning problems by sharing this newletter with someone who is struggling and needs this message of hope?

We sincerely appreciate it!

Nora Conway, OD

Success Story

We'd like to introduce you to Lilly. When she first came to our office at age 9, she was struggling with reading for quite some time. Her mom said it was a fight every night to do her homework. She would complain about being tired, get upset, dread reading outloud, and lacked confidence.

In October 2022, Lilly completed her Vision Therapy program. At that time she wasn't complaining of being tired, not skipping lines when reading, and was reading out loud comfortably. She even moved up a reading level since starting Vision Therapy!

Lilly's mom provided an update on how she is doing now, 16 months later. This is what she had to say, "Lilly is THRIVING in 5th grade! All of her grades have improved. Reading was the subject that she struggled the most in and vision therapy really helped her. She recently moved up a reading level, which is a huge accomplishment after the struggles she went through with her dyslexia. The most amazing part is how confident she is now. Before she would try anything to get out of reading and now she is on her school's reading team. She is even the team captain! She is currently getting ready for the spring competition and has read 8 books!"

Congratulations, Lilly! We are so proud of your hard work and love hearing about all your success! We look forward to hearing more about your accomplishments.

Why is my Smart Kid Struggling?

When a child is having trouble, it can be difficult for them to articulate what they are experiencing. Often times they:

  • Assume that how they see is how everyone sees

  • Have always seen that way, so they don't know there is an alternative

  • Internalize that they aren't "smart" or "just not good" at something

Parents also don't know which questions to ask or assume the child's vision is fine because they have passed their school/pediatrician vision screening. Being able to see the letters on the eyechart is just one of many of the visual skills required for reading and learning. Click here for a chart of the necessary visual skills.

If your child is struggling with reading or schoolwork, they may benefit from a Binocular Vision Evaluation. Schedule an appointment today!
